Words I never dreamed I'd ever type:

canadian legion poppyThe Canadian Legion can bite my lumpy butt.

Somebody at the Legion has been reading way too many white papers about "branding", and Colby Cosh is well & truly pissed:
The Legion's legal pestering of Bourque enrages me, in the same way and for the same reasons as it would if some private organization tried to trademark the image of the Christ child. I never thought I was helping to remove a piece of our cultural heritage from the public domain by buying Remembrance Day poppies. And I am certainly surprised to learn that "Remembrance" itself has become anyone's formal property. I won't pay for or wear one ever again. And neither should you.
You know what to do, boys...

UPDATE: An American blogger weighs in.

UPDATE 2: Colby Cosh writes:
After a couple thousand visits and an appearance on CJAD Montreal opposite Mr. Butt, I've received a grand total of zero negative letters about this entry. One correspondent did credit me with "brass balls" -- but I thought rather the same thing of Butt when he pointed out on-air that Canada's poppy policy was originally inherited from the Royal British Legion. What, you may ask, is the British Legion's policy regarding unauthorized use of the poppy on individual websites? They actively encourage it. Bob's friends and neighbours are invited to let us know whether he clangs when he walks.
